Self Improvement And Self Growth

Self Improvement and Self Growth

by Remez Sasson

Nowadays the terms self-improvement, self-growth and self-help have become popular. We find many books about these subjects and many websites too. It seems that people are turning inside to find the solution to their problems. They seek knowledge, techniques, workshops, lectures and teachers who can show them the way. People begin to understand that self improvement and self growth improve the quality of life.

The subconscious mind is one of the major keys to self-improvement and self-growth. By changing the contents of the subconscious mind you change your habits, behavior and attitudes. This is brought about by thinking, meditation, visualization and affirmations.

The process of inner change requires inner work. It is not enough to read, you have to practice what you read, and this needs time and effort. There is no such thing as instant self improvement. Any inner change takes time, and there must be motivation, desire, ambition, perseverance and dedication. Outer and inner resistance and opposition must be taken into account too. Upon starting any self improvement program, most people usually encounter inner resistance that come from their old habits and their subconscious mind, and also resistance and opposition from the people around them.

The desire to change, build new habits and improve must be strong enough to resist any laziness, desire to give up and the ridicule or opposition from family, friends or colleagues.

Let me tell you something about myself. I have been drawn to self-improvement techniques from an early age, and have regarded them as a source for inner strength, happiness and a way to a better life. One of the most useful techniques that I have discovered was a simple, but very effective technique. It consisted of watching how people behaved and acted in various situations, and then looking inside myself, to find out if I behaved in the same way under the same conditions.

When I saw people with some traits of character, or a certain kind of behavior that I did not like, I examined myself to see if I possessed them too. If I did, I visualized and rehearsed in my mind a different sort of behavior. In my mind's eye I saw myself with the opposite traits of character. I visualized myself in situations, where I manifested the new behavior.

When I encountered traits of character or behavior, which I liked, I used to think about their advantages and benefits and their importance in my life. Here too, I used visualization and affirmations and endeavored to act in this way in daily life.

In this way I have learned and benefited a lot from the behavior and actions of the people around me, at work, at home, in the street and everywhere else, from people in real life, and from watching people on the screen. It was never for the purpose of judging them or taking advantage of them, but for learning how to act, react and behave in a better way. This process had another benefit. It increased the knowledge about how the mind and thoughts influence the behavior and actions of people.

How can you too take advantage of this technique for self improvement and growth?

1. Look around you and watch how people behave in various circumstances. Watch the people you meet at home, work, at the supermarket, on the bus, train and on the street. Watch and learn also from people interviewed on TV, and also from movies.

2. Watch how people talk, walk, and react, and how they are treated by others.

3. Pay attention to the way people use their voice and how they react to others' voices. Watch how you feel and act when people shout or speak softly. Watch what happens when people get angry, restless and upset and what happens if they are calm and relaxed.

4. If you do not like what you see, analyze what and why you do not like it, and then analyze your own behavior to find out whether you behave in the same way. Be honest and impartial in your analysis.

5. If you find that you possess some traits that you do not like, affirm to yourself frequently that every time this happens you are going to become conscious of this behavior, actions or reactions, and endeavor to avoid behaving in that way.

6. Play in your mind a mental scene of how you would like to behave. Repeat it several times a day, every day.

7. When you detect a sort of behavior or character traits you like and desire to possess, try to act in a similar way. Here too, visualize several times each day a scene, where you act and behave in that different way.

8. You can also decide to change some habit and behavior patterns and develop new ones, because you believe they are necessary and beneficial, even without seeing them in others first.

9. Think and visualize over and over again in your mind how you would like to act and behave. Constantly remind yourself of the changes you desire to make, and strive to act according to them. Each time that you find yourself acting according to your old habit, remember your decision to change and improve, and act accordingly.

10. Do not be disappointed or frustrated if you do not attain fast results. It does not matter how many times you fail or forget to behave as you desired. Persist in your efforts and never give up, and you will begin to see how you and your life improve.

There are many self improvement and self growth techniques, but the one described here is simple, effective and easily performed.

Excellence Is Never An Accident

Excellence is Never an Accident

by Eric Johnson

"Excellence is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skilful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities."

The above anonymous quote was displayed prominently in an office, where, oddly enough, it seemed to attract very little attention. In any case, it has made enough of an impression to invite a look at these words of wisdom and see where these words may apply.

When embarking on a road trip, unless a bout of aimless wandering around the country is the intent, it is essential to have a destination in mind and a map. Most people in the world are living someone else’s agenda, which was obtained “by default.” Stated differently, most people are on a path of aimless wandering – much like a traveler without specific destination or map. It would be most valuable to look at different areas or aspects of life and ask “what is the intention here?” Consider the areas of family, business, spiritual practice, financial means, retirement, education, self development, health, and social interaction. Most people, by their own admission, are not living fully actualized lives and full potential. One main cause is a lack of clear and focused intention and direction.

Without clear direction, “sincere effort” is impossible. Perhaps effort becomes sincere when clear intention is established. Most people merely do an adequate job of trying whatever it is they’re doing because they are relatively un-inspired by the task. Sincere effort stems from high intention. It flows naturally. Look at the areas of life where one is just “hanging out” or “clocking time.” This indicates insincere effort – an opportunity to create a more focused and clear intention!

Assuming that intention is present, intelligent direction is also vital. In his timeless classic, “Think and Grow Rich,” Napoleon Hill recommends and promotes the “mastermind” group. The mastermind group is any group of like-minded individuals that assembled for counsel and participation in the attainment of a worthwhile goal. The mastermind group act very much like the directors of a large corporation, providing guidance, advice and direction essential to success; the use of the mastermind principle is the use of “intelligent direction.” From the combined intelligence of several comes new possibility that simply cannot come from a single mind.

Michael Jordan, who practiced over ten hours a day even at the height of his career, said practicing the wrong thing eight hours a day only makes a person excellent at doing the wrong thing. Consider the practice devoted to the essential skills that bring success as parents, spouses, employees and people in general. To excel, practice is much more important than actual presentation or performance. Out of the harsh discipline of practice comes skilful execution.

As humans we tend to see in purely linear “cause and effect” terms. “When given lemons, make lemonade” is certainly simplistic, but most people who are successful have had to become adept at taking some perceived challenge and using it as an opportunity for benefit, value and profit. This comes from introspection, the counsel of open minded and visionary people (of which there are few).

Each of these steps, when applied, provides opportunity, challenge, impact and benefit. With these steps in mind, it is a matter of will to trade in mediocrity for excellence!

Harness the power of your dreams

Harness the power of your dreams

By Deanna Mascle | Date Submitted: 11/11/05

Keywords: inspiration, motivation, success, encouragement, dream

More Details about Inspiration and Motivation here.

Summary: In the end so much is possible thanks to the power of dreams and yet so many people seem unwilling to free their own dreams.

"If you can imagine it, You can achieve it. If you can dream it, You can become it."

-William Arthur Ward

William Arthur Ward's quote should be a powerful call to action. Dreams have tremendous power. They sustain us through desperate times and drive us through difficult ones and give us hope for the future. More important-they inspire us!

Where would human beings be without dreams? Would we have explored distant places or invented the means to travel to those destinations? How many children are alive today thanks to the dreams of doctors and scientists? What works of art lift the hearts of countless masses due to the dreams of artists?

In the end so much is possible thanks to the power of dreams and yet so many people seem unwilling to free their own dreams. They shrug them off, ignore them, or reject them entirely-too difficult, impossible, ridiculous, meaningless.

But even the most frivolous dreams have meaning. If one person's life is touched by that dream-whether they are inspired, changed, or simply lightened-then that dream has power and meaning.

It is sad that in our society to be called a "dreamer" is actually an insult. In many societies, to be a dreamer was once a high calling. If we think of all that dreams have caused-from space travel to the creation of the United States of America to a polio vaccine-perhaps we can make dreaming acceptable again.

What do you do with your own dreams? Do you dare to voice them, dare to do something about them? Or do you instead spend your time finding excuses for why your dreams are impossible?

No dream is impossible! You have to believe that and you have to dare to dream, or your dream will be impossible, but there is no one to blame but yourself because you never let it become possible. Perhaps that is why so many perceive being a "dreamer" as something negative, because they view it as a passive exercise, but being a true "dreamer" is anything but passive-it requires action!

Yes, it is scary to dream, it is scary to take a leap of faith, to risk yourself. Even more frightening than failure is the knowledge that once you take that risk you will have lost your dream forever.

But do not be afraid, you can succeed, but even if THIS dream does fail, once you've become someone that dares to dream there will be others. Once you've made that change, once you've become a dreamer, there is no going back--and that is certainly a step on the road to success!

So, remember to Dare to Dream!
