The Value Of Leadership Development

The Value of Leadership Development

by Bart Icles

These days, there are many organizations who fail to realize the importance of leadership development. It is not unusual to discount the value of developing leaders in an organization, especially when it believes that corporate leaders can always have their own way. An autocratic view of leadership often clouds our understanding of what it really is - and in times like this, a need to develop leadership may just be the answer to make the organization realize what leadership really is.

While many people say that leaders are born and not made, there is - in reality - no such thing as a natural born leader. This only stresses the importance of leadership development in any organization. Practically anyone can have the potential to become a leader. What sets one leader from the rest is how much effort has been given to develop this kind of potential.

What does leadership development really mean? One can think of it as an effort to improve the ability of the person to lead or an undertaking centered on enhancing the abilities and attitudes of leaders that have been sitting on top of the chain of command. A successful attempt to developing leadership takes more than just the ability to give out orders - it also requires people skills, diplomacy, and a certain level of understanding of how much space there is from being on top and being at the bottom.

The development of leadership in any organization must be addressed in two levels - both at an individual and a group level. The development of individual leadership can be facilitated in a hands-on or in a classroom environment or even a combination of both. This kind of leadership training is important for those who are about to go on their first day on the field and for those who find it a big challenge to have a shot at holding the reins of command. This is important so they will not end up stagnant at the bottom rung of the corporate ladder.

On the other hand, leadership development at a group level is also important to any type of organization and regardless of the industry it belongs to. Development of group leadership helps different leaders understand that they should perceive and process things as a team, and they should think and act like a team. It is important for corporate leaders that they should act like well-oiled machine - aware of each other's strengths, weakness, patterns and goals so they can work as one to achieve success.
